Introduction

Hi, everyone! Many have asked if we can offer a study of the Thin Within book at a venue other than Facebook, so here we are…Just for you!

Starting IMMEDIATELY – November 30, 2015 (But you can go at your own pace at any time).

Thin Within BookYou will need a copy of the Thin Within book by Arthur and Judy Halliday.

Also, a journal, bible, and a spiral deck of index cards will all come in VERY handy!

Each day, I will post an assignment here with a corresponding video. The videos are about 5-10 minutes long and you don’t really need them. I would love to see a community sharing responses to what is here. That is when the really GOOD stuff happens in our lives!

Welcome!

Let’s take a plunge into the Introductory pages of the book. You won’t regret it! 🙂

Assignment:
* Read pages vi-xx in the Thin Within book.

* Complete the survey on pages xvi-xx.

* BE SURE to use the 2002 or 2005 version of the Thin Within
book instead of the 1985 version! THIS IS IMPORTANT! The two
versions of the book barely resemble one another.

Journal, complete, or consider the following:

1. While you are reading the Acknowledgments section on the book (page vii-viii) circle every reference to the word “God” or “Jesus Christ” or their synonyms (“His,” “Lord,” etc., where applicable.) -Take note of the Names that the authors use for God and what characteristics they ascribe to Him.
– How does this make you feel about the authors? Do you have questions? Do you feel any confidence?

2. Read About the Authors. As you do, note what you can identify with. Is there anything about Judy’s or Arthur’s testimonies that you can relate to? Again, consider how reading these testimonies makes you feel about the authors. What questions remain?

3. As you read the introduction, take a moment to pause midway down the pages (xiii). You will see the statement “You will experience an invitation whispered to your soul from God–an invitation to enter in, to draw nearer, to plunge deeper, to experience more fully the joy and abundant living that He intends for you.” Do you hear the invitation yet? Be sure to take a moment to still your heart long enough so that if the invitation is whispered, you can hear it. You may want to journal a response to this question or a prayer to God welcoming Him to speak!

4. In the Introduction, there is a prayer on page xv. Can you identify with this prayer at all? How so? If not, consider writing a prayer that *does* reflect how you feel as you begin this journey.

5. Read the “Before You Begin” section of the book. Complete the survey in that section.

6. Take time to look at your calendar and carve out when you will do your assignments each day. (You might even want to schedule it into your DayTimer or calendar!)

7. Consider memorizing Psalm 84:5-7 which may be found on page xvi.

Ideas to stimulate your sharing to our group (pick only one if you like):

1. Any impressions that God lays on your heart as you read, any questions, comments, concerns.

2. What, if any, questions arise for you as you do/did the survey. What questions do you hope to have answered about yourself or about God?

3. How are you feeling as you begin this journey? What fears, thoughts, expectations, hope, etc., do you feel? This requires some level of vulnerability–share what you feel comfortable with and no more.

So excited to be here. Starting my TW journey again and this time going about it a little differently by doing this study and blogging myself to stay accountable. I was happy to see another option besides Facebook! Thanks Heidi! You are a true inspiration.

    1. Katie, I am so happy that you have begun a blog. I will add a blog roll in the margin and see if you won’t start a trend…inspiring other members to start blogs! Thank you! That is how the Thin Within blog began. It was my personal blog for a number of years before becoming the TW blog! 🙂

I’ve failed so many times and tried so many ways to conquer my weight problem. It doesn’t help that I fight Chronic Fatigue Syndrome on a daily basis. Heidi, your energy has jumped off my computer screen and uplifted this tired old soul. Thank you! Looking forward to the journey!

    1. Hi, Trish. I am so glad to hear that there is something that is encouraging you! Especially in my silliness. It really is true that we have this treasure (God’s own Presence via the Holy Spirit) in jars of clay (our fragile cracked pot bodies! lol!) to show that the all-surpassing power is from God and not from us! WOO HOO! To God be the glory!

I am starting my thin within journey again for I believe the 4th time…..lost count!!! This time I am feeling different about the journey and I do believe that God whispered to me his invitation to begin again. Thank you Heidi for your help with my journey.

    1. Hi, Vicki. You never really quit. Truly, the Thin Within journey looks precisely as you have been doing it with starts and stops…I am sounding like a broken record. But my point is, you haven’t failed! Hopefully you have learned a bunch of things that don’t work that you can avoid or prepare for the next time! That way our failings become lessons in how to be victors over our temptations rather than victims to them. Does that make sense?

      1. Totally makes sense, Heidi, and so very true!! I’m here to start a fresh, even though I have other classes going, I want a fresh start for me to release these last pounds! Yes, I truly believe I’ve been a cocoon and I’m changing into that beautiful butterfly that God intends me to be. Praise God!! And a huge thanks to you, Heidi.

Hello Wow Thin Within has a blog! That’s great! I am waiting on the book, but when I opened up my Thin Within workbook and I felt a surge of peace wash over me, Gods peace continued as i continued to flip through the pages. Years ago looked at Thin WithIn, but I could not handle my emotional issues so I got into Weigh Down Workshop instead…..I have now gained back a lot of weight, been praying about something new…. Thanks

    1. Dolores, I am going to urge you as I do many of my Thin Within coaching clients…You haven’t failed! Not really. You are here. The only way to “fail” is to just quit completely and never return! In Thin Within we learn to observe and correct when we “mess up.” In this way, our mess ups become opportunities for our Redeeming God to turn the mess up into a victory for his glory! We know that he doesn’t do things like we might think…so in our weakness, He is made strong! Let’s boast all the more gladly in our weakness, therefore, like the apostle Paul! Let’s allow failure to be a wonderful teacher and not an undertaker!

    1. Hi, Emily. I love that our journey never really stopped so we don’t have to start it again. The TW journey is a sanctification journey and will last our entire lives. So when we mess up, bail, “start” fresh, we are really just DOING the journey as God intends. Over time, there will be fewer rabbit trails and if we *do* find ourselves chasing after something other than what is on this path we will come back to the path a bit more quickly…but I am convinced that the journey IS filled with stops, starts, turns, jet propulsion ahead, derailments, joys, sorrows! That IS the journey! 🙂 I hope this makes sense. 🙂

      1. Again, Heidi, couldn’t be in more agreement with you. And as reading this I was reminded of something that has helped me lately, so am going to put it here. Not sure it fits here, but since God placed it on my heart, I’m sharing.

Hi everyone, I’m so grateful for this opportunity and am looking forward to journeying with you together. Oh to REALLY experience this, “God is sufficient and satisfying and His love and grace is grander than anything you can imagine,” and not just to read those words on the page. That is my prayer for all of us. 🙂

Hi! I am kinda late getting started but I do have a question. I am pre diabetic and post menopausal, (one I really want to avoid the other I can’t), how does it effect me? I mean I think I know the answer but I just want to hear others..

    1. Katherine, thank goodness it’s never too late to start. Here it is exactly 1 month from when you posted and I’m just starting. What I love about doing this study this way. We can start at anytime, and take it at our own pace. I’m loving that! This will make it so much easier to complete it. With other studies I’ve done, I get behind, and then too far behind to catch up, so feel discouraged. Here, the timetable is between me and God!! Praise the Lord!!

    2. Hi, Katherine. It looks like I missed out seeing your question back in December. Sorry about that. It is always best to check with your medical practitioner, but since 1975 people who are diabetics and menopausal or post menopausal have found the principles work wonders. The trick is eating when hungry, stopping eating when no longer hungry, and being sure to let God feed us spiritually.

  6. And now my answers to your questions.
1 – It is obvious reading that Judy and Arthur of of God. They have put God above everything else in their lives. And I know they are smart, intelligent people, because of the way they describe YOU, Heidi. 🙂 And what is amazing, those words were written quite awhile ago and they still describe you exactly. I thank God for you.
2 – I love what Judy writes “I am eternally grateful for the joy, peace and contentment I now have where food, weight ad my body are concerned.” I’m certainly much closer to being able to say that than I was 5 years ago, I’m looking forward to the day I can say that completely. and when she says “what could have been a short trip took me some forty years of wandering in the wilderness.” I can SO relate to this! And shows me that there is hope at the end of this long journey. And her words “He gave me a ravenous appetite for His word.” I have that now, thank you God! Right off the bat, Arthur and I have something in common, being from a small Kansas town.
3 – I hear the invitation. It is so awesome that I can delve into God’s Word and grow a closer relationship with Him, which leads me to His way for me to be the person He meant for me to be, both inside and outside.
4 – Yes, it couldn’t be worded more perfectly to say what is in my heart.
    5 – Done
    6 – Done
7 – Honestly, that is not one that I have chosen to memorize, but I have read it and claim it.
    ======================
3 – I have expectations and hope that I am going to be faithful to complete this study, right here, at the pace God leads me and that I will find success in releasing more weight as I turn more and more to HIm through this study.

I got this link today so I will check in here for accountability if you guys don’t mind. I loved reading some of your posts. I’m restarting with Introduction/Chapter 1….again!

I’ve struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. Going through the survey I was embarrassed to admit that was 12 years old when I began to have major issues with my weight. Those issues lasted through my high school years and the majority of my college years. I’m excited to take this journey and bring God into this journey of health.

Hi my name is Nisha, just started today! I prayed that God would help me this time with my weight loss. I was tired of being exercise and food obsessed to lose weight. He first led me to Taste for Truth and after my 30 days with the awesome Bible study, I knew that Thin Within was next! Renewing my mind and thinking of my body and food this way is so new to me. But I am so grateful to God that He is removing my old ways and showing me His will for healthy living! I am both apprenhensive and excited about this journey! Trusting Him along the way as He continues to free me from the bondage of health and wellness my way and the world’s way!

    1. Hi Nisha, great to see you here. And amen to more freedom for you!

I saw your comment pop up in my email and I thought maybe I could join you as you’re just starting and I am now miles behind everyone else. My reading and answering of the questions fell by the way side with the busyness of Christmas and selling a property. It’s been in the back of my mind to get started again. I’ll pull out my book and journal today and get back into it. 🙂

At some point, I would love to have someone who has a heart for this community…establishing it, encouraging the members and offering a consistent presence here. I am just getting started on my Thin Within journey. I’ve read through Day 10 of the book but I want to go back and do this one day at a time (like you’re supposed to lol!), watching the video and answering the questions. I’m glad to find this online class. I’m looking for a group of people to connect with and share struggles and stories. The concept of eating this way is not new to me. I’ve done Weigh Down and read books on intuitive eating. But there seems to be something different about Thin Within. I hope to get to know some of you better as we go.

    1. Hi, Karen V. Ooooh! How fun! You got the birds-eye view of the first part of the book! I will be eager to hear what you think as you go through. Take your time and go at whatever pace God has for you. 🙂 There are a lot of differences between TW and WDW. So you are right on the money there! 🙂

Hi… I just wanted to check in and say I’m just starting this study today. I’ve owned the book for about 12 years, and when I originally bought it, I went through it with two of my best friends. But looking back at that time in my life, I know that it just didn’t sink in to my heart. I think that God was doing other things in me, and it just wasn’t the time.
I have an instagram where I’ve been documenting since January 1st my continual push towards fitness. I’ve been really trying to bring it into the Lord’s plan for me. My main goal this year was just to not give up. It’s watch_bree_fit.
I don’t know if anyone else is doing the study right now, but I’d love company! (March 2016)
As for the questions… I think the big thing I noticed in the introduction pages, and in the comments here, is that “starts and stops” thing. Like, it’s not about, “Okay, THIS time…” as if the previous efforts are all loss. It’s all together the story of my growing towards the Lord in this area. That’s really cool to me.
Also, I know this is silly, but I love dance, and I miss it like crazy, and it’s been almost 15 years since I’ve taken class, but one of my little dreams is that I would be in shape enough to enjoy a class… and somehow reading in the author section that Judy is a dancer just made me so happy. 🙂

    1. Bree! Welcome! There are a few people here who are, in fact, doing the study…perhaps more than it appears. 🙂 I hope you will hang in there and enjoy. Thanks so much for your insights about the starts and stops thing. This IS the journey. It is getting back on the horse again when we slide off! You will be dancing in a class again soon!

  13. Dear Heidi I so need this. Can I join now please. The Lord showed me that I had been using “any priest that had a 3 rams to sacrifice” to me He was saying you go to all these people for diet advise and do their bidding and don’t come to me the Great HIgh Priest”. I am feeling reticent but the Battle is the Lord’s (another promise I got today). Love and thanks Kate

Father, I long to hear Your whispered invitation. I believe You intend joy and abundant life for me, grace indeed, undeserved favor! Today, I question my ability to hear it. So, perhaps my journey of healing needs to begin there? If so, I am ready, LORD. Heal my hearing… Help me to hear Your Voice. Fine-tune my receptivity so that i may hear… and receive Your beautiful and wonderful invitation to enter in, draw near, and plunge deep. Amen.

Wow! I am thrilled to see there is someone else who has just now begun this study. I’m only finished with the introductory material and already I have noticed how God is working through this study to change my heart. I have struggled with food and other areas all through my life…as far back as I can remember…and I would like to lay down my resistance to God’s working in my life. The most impactful item for me was the description of one of the author’s interactions with an AIDS sufferer and how the patient had done foolish things, things that he knew logically might lead to his death, in order to seek to fill that empty part of his soul that longs for true love and true connection to his maker.

I pray God will help me to interact honestly with this material.
